Grand Slam de Judô – BRASIL
The enthusiastic crowd has chosen its new darling. Since no Brazilians managed to win gold in the first day of Rio de Janeiro Grand Slam, held at Maracanăzinho sports hall…
…the public cheered for Austrian Ludwig Paischer or “the blondie” as they called him until the end of the final of the -60kg division. To give back the support from the stands (around 6.000 people), Paischer took pictures with all of them. The fans were also happy with home stars such as Leandro Guilheiro (silver, -73kg), Sarah Menezes (bronze, -48kg), Erika Miranda (bronze, -48kg) and Rafaela Silva (bronze, -57kg).
“I felt very well in the competition since the beginning. This was the most impressive crowd I have ever seen and it is just amazing the way they have supported me. Part of my gold medal belongs to them”, said the Silver Olympic Medalist Paischer.
Russian Alim Gadanov won the -66kg category, with Dirk van Tichelt (BEL) on the top of the -73kg division. Among the female categories, Frederique Jossinet won the -48kg, a few months after winning the European Championships and proofing herself to be in great form in the age of 33.
Japan was crowned with Yuka Nischida (-52kg) and Telma Monteiro celebrated her first Grand Slam gold (-57kg) after a bronze in Moscow earlier in May. In the -63 category, gold for Claudia Malzahn.
“I am very happy. This is my first gold medal. Today is a day of glory for me”, Malzahn celebrated.
Brazilian two times Olympic Bronze Medalist, Leandro Guilheiro, couldn´t say he was happy with his silver in front of his home crowd, but for sure there was something special in his medal.
“It is always nice to be on the podium, especially after the three surgeries I´ve suffered: back, elbow and shoulders”, comments Guilheiro.
And the good moments were not only restricted to the tatami. The excitement was all over the sports hall, with dancing, music shows and colored lights. Toni Garrido, a very popular Brazilian singer, presented his most popular songs and also performed the Brazilian National Anthem. Gadgets were thrown towards the stands and special prizes were offered to the most animated fan. The show continues this Sunday.

The undefeated Carano (7-0) and her top rival, Cyborg (7-1), are slated to battle five, 5-minute rounds in the first-ever fight for the STRIKEFORCE Women’s 145-Pound World Title.
The most-desired matchup in the history of women’s MMA is also one that is undeniably the most dangerous assignment to date for a pair regarded as the preeminent female fighters in the world.
Carano, who will be trained for this fight by MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture, has achieved larger than life status over the course of the last year. In a Yahoo! online poll that named the “Top 10 Influential Women of 2008,” the 27 year-old Las Vegas resident ranked fifth, placing ahead of First Lady Michelle Obama and famed journalists Katie Couric and Barbara Walters. Carano has also been featured in the pages of Maxim and profiled by ESPN’s newsmagazine show E:60.
Confident of ruining Carano’s eagerly awaited return to the cage is the rugged 23-year-old Cyborg, who has been known to devastate foes with brute strength and has been calling out Carano for several months. Cyborg, along with her husband and fellow Strikeforce competitor Evangelista Cyborg, is a member of Brazil’s famed fight squad, Chute Boxe.
